How to plan CBC schemes of work for a whole term
A good scheme of work saves you hours every week. The trick is to build it once from the curriculum design, then adjust as the term unfolds.
1. Start with the strands and sub-strands
List every strand and sub-strand for your subject and grade. Then count the lessons you realistically have this term after removing exams, assessments, public holidays and school events.
2. Allocate lessons, not just weeks
Give each sub-strand a number of lessons based on its weight and difficulty. Heavy topics get more time, and revision and assessment lessons are planned in from the start rather than squeezed in at the end.
3. Write outcomes, activities and resources
- Use the specific learning outcomes from the curriculum design.
- Choose one learner-centred activity for each lesson.
- Note the learning resources you will need so you can prepare early.
- Add a short assessment method such as observation, oral questions or a quick written task.
4. Review every two weeks
Compare the plan with what actually happened. Move content forward if needed and note why. This habit also makes your records of work much easier to complete.
If you would rather start from a ready-made draft, our schemes of work are editable Word files you can adapt to your school and class.
